On January 23, Belvedere Elementary School hosted local education leaders as an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Showcase School.
AVID uses proven, research-based strategies to prepare all students for success in high school, college and careers, especially students from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
Belvedere, part of the San Bernardino City Unified School District (SBCUSD), was the only elementary school in San Bernardino County to be named an AVID Showcase School. School leaders interested in incorporating the AVID curriculum and philosophy into their own curriculum were invited to tour Belvedere classrooms, speak to teachers and administrators, and get a hands-on feel for how AVID makes a difference for students.
“AVID is about having high expectations for all students and giving them the tools to meet those expectations,” Belvedere Principal Ann Pearson said. “AVID-trained teachers don’t just teach the curriculum, they teach students study skills and teach them to believe in themselves, in part because we believe in them.”
AVID is offered at every SBCUSD comprehensive high school and middle school and at several elementary schools.
