As I prepare to cap my long career in public education, I want to reflect on the important role that teachers, administrators, and other employees play in ensuring that children receive a quality
education in welcoming and nurturing schools.
The San Bernardino City Unified School District is one of the largest employers in the Inland Empire, with more than 8,000 employees who work in a variety of teaching and non-teaching roles. If you know a school
employee you know they ARE the heart and soul of our schools and administrative offices.
Our amazing teachers plant the seeds of knowledge that one day will grow, and our classified employees water those seeds and tend to them, knowing they hold future promise. And let’s not forget our administrators
and managers, who ensure that children have quality teachers and support staff.
During my three decades in public education, I’ve been blessed to have worked with some awesome employees, and some of the best and hardest working school staff are right here in SBCUSD.
I’m also proud of the accomplishments of my executive leadership team, who you might know as Cabinet, because they remain committed to working closely with school leaders and teachers to educate the students
of this great city. Together, Cabinet and I have worked tirelessly each and every day to ensure better outcomes for young people.
As I close my reflection this week, I want to shine a spotlight on one special member of our team who will also be leaving the District. Dr. Rachel Monarrez soon. She has been appointed as the Superintendent
of the Worcester School District in Massachusetts. Here are her farewell remarks from our Board meeting this week.
I know Dr. Monarrez wil be very successful. And as I prepare to retire, I do so knowing that the kids in San Bernardino and Highland are alright because SBCUSD has a deep bench of strong leaders. Dr. Monarrez
and I are leaving our schools are in seasoned and capable hands.

District Police Chief Urges Students to Remain Alert
As always, the San Bernardino City Unified School District is committed to providing a safe learning
environment for our students. As we near the end of this school year, we continue taking the necessary precautions on our campuses to ensure student and staff safety.
Although the 2021–2022 school year will end in a few more weeks, District Police Chief Joseph Paulino encourages families and students to remain alert about student safety. This safety letter is also to provide you with important information about a rash of crimes taking place in the San Bernardino and Highland area that have impacted our students.

school year can secure a spot by applying today.
The Creative After-School Programs for Success (CAPS) expands the school day by providing free, quality structured activities for students before and after school. Families should fill out a separate application for children
at each school.

Cardinal Wins Congressional Art Contest
San Bernardino High School junior Jannah Parafina is the winner of the Congressional Art Contest for Congressman
Pete Aguilar’s 31st District. Jannah’s piece, titled A Night Out, will be housed in the Cannon Tunnel of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. and will be on display for a year. She will also receive
a $3,000 scholarship and will fly out to the Congressional Art reception in July.
Awesome to the Core
Every year, the Board of Education and I present the Golden and Crystal Apple Awards to 14 individuals who live and breathe
the District’s mission.
In the coming weeks, we’re taking a closer look at the employees who received a 2022 Crystal Apple or Golden Apple Award for their impactful work with our students.
Fairfax Elementary Principal is Like Family to her Students
Fairfax Elementary Principal Ruth Curry received the certificated manager Crystal Apple Award in May.
When we reflect on the time we have spent in school, it is not always common to remember your principal. You tend to see your teacher every day, but you usually only see the principal when you’re in trouble.
This is not the case for Ruth Curry. Mrs. Curry is an unsung hero. She is a gentle soul who always puts the needs of others first. Ruth has so many stories to share about her students. Many of those stories illustrate
how involved she is with the families of Fairfax Elementary.
She shared a story of a family that struggled with homelessness. She supported the family with community resources and offered a shoulder to cry on for the grandmother, who was raising her grandson on her own.
When grandma died of COVID, the hospital called her and said that grandma left her name as her emergency contact. Ruth worked with the hospital and the caring community of Fairfax to find a home for the young
boy.

Ken Hubbs Foundation Honors SBCUSD Student Athletes
Cajon High’s Seth Johnson and Pacific High’s Miranda Owen are Overall Winners
Twelve standout SBCUSD student athletes received a 2022 Ken Hubbs Award for exemplifying character, leadership and determination.
The award is given in memory of Ken Hubbs, a four-sport athlete from Colton who eventually went on to be the National League Rookie of the Year in 1962. One male and one female honoree is selected from each school based on athletic
achievement, citizenship, community involvement, and commitment to further their education.
Kudos go to Arroyo Valley High’s Stephanie Guadarrama and Cronus Rodriguez, Cajon High’s Jaime Alexander and Seth Johnson, Indian Springs High’s Julie Chirpres and Eduardo Lara, Pacific High’s Miranda
Owen and Reyes Monarrez, San Bernardino High’s Elfredia Bull and Isaiah Figueroa, and San Gorgonio High’s Unieque Solis and Santiago Torres.
And special congratulations go to Cajon High’s Seth Johnson for being named the male Ken Hubbs Overall Award winner and Miranda Owen, Pacific High School, for earning the Keith Hubbs Memorial Award. |
