State Vaccine Mandate for Students Delayed Until Summer 2023
On April 14, 2022, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) announced that it will not require students to get the COVID-19 vaccine until after the next school year. According to the CDPH, delaying the requirement until at least the summer of 2023 will “ensure sufficient time for successful implementation." Families will still have to ensure students receive all other required vaccinations, but the COVID 19 vaccine will not be required to attend school in the 2022-23 school year. SBCUSD has advocated for parent choice regarding the COVID 19 vaccine and will continue to keep you informed about any further changes to this requirement.
Register for In-Person Summer School Starting Monday
Families
who want their elementary and middle school children to attend summer school in person can register them starting Monday, April 18 and until May 6.
Summer school will run from June 8 to June 30 and the hours for elementary school will be 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. CAPS will be offered from 1:30 to 6 p.m. Register at www.sbcusd.com/summer2022.
Middle school students, including incoming sixth-graders will attend summer school also from June 8 to June 30 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A CAPS STEAM enrichment will be from 12:30 to 6 p.m. and spots are limited.
Students who participate in summer school will strengthen their academic foundations in English language arts, math, and a variety of exploratory electives to prepare them for the next grade. Free breakfast and lunch
will be provided for all students enrolled in summer school. Transportation will be provided for students who qualify.

Indian Education Family Culture Nights
Students and families are invited to learn about Native American culture at our Family Culture Nights!
Family Culture Nights feature free events and hands-on activities on most Thursday nights from 6–8 p.m. at the SBCUSD Professional Development Center (PDC), 4030 Georgia Blvd. in San Bernardino.
Upcoming Family Culture Nights are: April 14, 21, and 28; and May 5 and 12, 2022. Call the Indian Education office at (909) 473-2076 for more information.
Kinder Corner
If
your child is starting kindergarten in August, you may be wondering what you can do to prepare them for the first day of school.
Kindergarten is especially important for children who have not attended preschool or daycare before since this will be their time away from parents and the comforts of home. If you anticipate that your child may have
some separation anxiety, families can ease the transition by speaking with children about school well before the first day. When the big day comes, be sure to allow plenty of time for your child to get ready for school
in the morning. Waking earlier allows you and your child more time to address any issues without running late for school.
Enrollment is now underway and kindergarten families that register their children now have more opportunities to get to know their future educational family before school begins in August. For example, casually visiting
a school a few times before the first day of school can ease the transition for children who have not been in a learning environment away from home or their family.

Free Food Distribution
The Tzu Chi Foundation is distributing free groceries on Monday, April 18 from 8:45 to 10 a.m. at Del Vallejo Leadership and STEAM
Academy, 1885 East Lynwood Drive in San Bernardino.

Aeries Parent Portal is a Powerful Tool for Student Success
Did you know that SBCUSD parents and guardians can monitor student grades, coursework, attendance,
and much more on a daily basis with the click of a button?
While the majority of families with children enrolled in San Bernardino City Unified Schools have heard of the Aeries Parent Portal,
many families are not yet using this secure online tool to monitor their child’s attendance and grades, said Dr. Beatriz Gonzalez, Director of the District’s Family Engagement Office.
“The Aeries Parent Portal can be a powerful tool for families because it’s packed with useful information that can be used as a launching pad for family conversations,” Gonzalez said. “We know that Aeries
takes some getting used to, and we are providing these training sessions so that families are equipped with tools to see how their child is doing in school.”
The Family Engagement Office offers free weekly training sessions for families interested in learning how to use Aeries. Sessions are on Wednesdays from 1:30–2:30 p.m. You can register at https://bit.ly/AERIES20. For more information, please contact the Family Engagement Office at (909) 880-4057.
