Future in Focus

Quick tips, brief updates, and reminders about what’s coming up to help families, employees, and our community make the most of our schools.

Honoring Our Own
On Tuesday, June 22, the Board of Education will hold a special virtual meeting to recognize the dedicated SBCUSD employees who have reached milestone anniversaries, those who earned a prestigious Golden Apple or Crystal Apple Award, and the staff members who are retiring this school year.

Watch the virtual celebration starting at 5 p.m. on our YouTube channel. And, be sure to bookmark our channel, where you can watch a variety of videos about SBCUSD. This is also where you can watch Board of Education meetings live at 5:30 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of the month.

Highlights of the Week

Highlights of key news from the week that will help you stay in the know.

Class of 2020 Commencement is Today
Our Board of Education made good on a promise made to the Class of 2020. An in-person graduation ceremony was held for all SBCUSD members of the Class of 2020 today, Friday, June 18, 2021, at Glen Helen Pavilion. This will be a single graduation ceremony for students from all high schools, who could not have an in-person graduation ceremony in June 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Attendees must have tickets to enter.

Watch Recent Graduation Ceremonies Online
All SBCUSD high schools wrapped up graduation ceremonies with much pomp and circumstance. Graduates and their families can still relive that momentous occasion by watching a pre-recorded livestream of each ceremony.

When Temperatures Soar
The first major heat wave brought record high temperatures to San Bernardino and inland Southern California this week.
Throughout the summer and fall, when temperatures of 90 degrees or higher are forecasted, the District’s Safety Office sends a heat alert notifying all athletic directors, coaches and physical education staff; managers; and other key personnel to ensure everyone stays safe by limiting outdoor activities, among several other important precautions.
At home, you can visit www.ready.gov/heat for more tips to beat the heat.

In the Spotlight

Be Wise. Immunize Students Before School Starts
With the new school year less than two months away, now’s a good time to check your child’s immunization card to ensure they have all the shots required by the state of California to attend our schools when they reopen to students in August.
State law requires that children attending public schools in California have these immunizations: Polio; Varicella; Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis, also known as DTAP or TDAP; Hepatitis B; Measles, Mumps, Rubella, or MMR; and HIB.
These are the only vaccinations required by the state of California for children attending schools in the 2021-2022 school year which begins Monday, August 2. At this time, there is no state requirement for students to be vaccinated for COVID-19.
For more information, please call Student Wellness & Support Services at (909) 473-2080. And remember to always keep a record of your child’s shots so you can provide them to the school as proof.

Face Coverings: What is Changing at SBCUSD After June 15?
California fully reopened its economy on June 15 and eased the restrictions that have been in place during COVID-19. However, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has stated that “school masking guidance remains in place and masks are required. Going forward, CDPH will continue to provide guidance around youth settings.”
SBCUSD’s face covering requirements and other safety mitigation measures will remain in place until further notice. That means students attending summer school and employees must continue wearing face coverings.
We anticipate that CDPH will be issuing directives for schools for the 2021-2022 school year by July, which we will share with you as soon as we know more.
